About Department
The main objective of the department is to promote systematic exploration and development of mineral resources. The department undertakes geological mapping, mineral exploration, reserve estimation, regulatory functions, and supports the country’s mining policy initiatives. It also facilitates auctioning of mineral blocks in a transparent manner.
The Directorate of Geology and Mining (DGM) of Maharashtra, headquartered in Nagpur, is recognized as one of the best-organized DGMs in the country. It comprises a core team of Geologists, Drilling Engineers, Chemists, Administrative Officers, Survey and Map Officers, Statistical and Accounts Officers, GIS Assistants, Stenographers, and other support staff.
District Mining Officers (DMOs) are posted at the district level to oversee the technical and administrative functions of the mining sector within the district. They also assist the District Collector in the administration and management of mineral resources.
This extensive technical expertise is complemented by state-of-the-art equipment and modern techniques for mineral exploration. The department includes the Mahageomin Laboratory and specialized Drilling Wings and it also offers chemical laboratory services for comprehensive analysis and testing.
Maharashtra State Mining Corporation Ltd.(MSMC) is a limited company fully owned by the Government of Maharashtra incorporated under Companies Act, 1956 on 14th November, 1973 with the main objects to promote systematic development of various mines with a view to conserve the mineral wealth of the nation.And to purchase, take on lease, or otherwise acquire any mines, mining rights, and Metalliferous land in the state of Maharashtra, or elsewhere, and any interest therein, and to explore, work, exercise, develop, and turn to account the same.
